BW50K - November 26, 2023

Thirteen years ago, some friends and I scouted out a five-mile course through Buckeye Woods Park in rural Medina County. The purpose was to hold a new free, fat-ass after-Thanksgiving ultramarathon run. Participants would run six such loops plus one more mile to make it to 50K, or cut that in half for 25K. Runners could also just show up and run as much or as little as they wanted.

And run they did. Folks came from all over to join the fun. Although there was no fee, we made them join the Medina County Road Runners in order to be official. The race was small and informal enough that I was able to act as Race Director yet also participate in the run. Eventually, I was able to hand those awesome RD duties off to others, but I've still (mostly) continued to run.

The race has continued to prosper, although there have been up and down years. I've managed to complete the 50K ten times (including the one Summer edition). Other times, I ran somewhat less than 50K, but once (and I'll never live this one down) missed the race entirely because I was traveling.

This year, 2023, we had a pretty good group. I'm glad to see the race doing so well!

Here are the results:

BW50K v9.0 -- Sunday, November 25, 2018 -- 7:30 a.m

Join us for the Ninth Annual Buckeye Woods 25K/50K Run, Autumn Edition. This is a free event for all members of the Medina County Road Runners Club.

The location is Buckeye Woods County Park (6335 Wedgewood Rd, Medina, OH 44256), and this event will begin promptly at 7:30 AM. Please arrive at least 10 minutes early to check in.

Runners will begin with a 1-mile loop and then traverse the 5-mile circuit around lakes and through woods six times, for a total of 31 miles. The route is 80% dirt or crushed stone trails, and flat, flat, flat! Perfect course for a first 50K, or simply a semi-aided long run! No pressure, but lots of support.

Participants can run as many or as few loops as they want. You can also show up at any time and run as much as you want with your friends. Anyone who makes it as far as 25K, but not as far as 50K will be recognized in the results as having completed a 25K run.

Aid will be limited. Runners should plan to bring their own supplies. If you feel so inclined, bring something to share with other runners. We have reserved the picnic shelter and will use it as the start/finish and provide water, energy drink, pop and some sort of food you'd normally see at a real race.

Registration for this event is FREE, but all participants MUST be CURRENT MCRR members. Please make sure your membership dues are paid up for this year if you plan to run. We are an awesome group of people, who do things as a club... so your membership is totally worth it.

At 3:30 PM (8 hours in), the race directors will need to pack up and leave (they have lives too). Any runners still on the course may self-report their finish time.

2017 BUCKEYE WOODS 50K/25K RESULTS

Thank you to everyone (runners, volunteers, family members and pets) who came out to participate in our annual BW50K event this Sunday. It was a sunny yet crisp day, but best of all it stayed dry. This race is my favorite club event and one of the things that makes our club great! Thank you to Alyssa Osborne for providing the wonderful finisher medals.

Congratulations to our first-time 50k finishers. You reached a new level of crazy-running today and we couldn’t be more proud to share it with you. Also, congrats to our 25k and 50k winners.
