TIM NECKAR

PERSONAL RUNNING COACH

"I am there side-by-side, stride for stride!"

I believe running should be serious fun. If you're looking for a personal running coach, you are indeed serious about your running. You have decided to make running more of a priority in your life, and you want to do it the correct way with guidance. If you are just starting out from "ground zero", running your first 5K, improving your 5K, 10K times, training for triathlons or duathlons, I can help you. If you are training for your first marathon, improving your marathon time, trying to qualify for Boston, or moving up to ultra-distances, I can help you. I will take your running seriously and in the meantime also make it fun.

KATHY BOWLIN

I am a 42 year old, part-time teacher and stay-at-home Mom. I have exercised off and on throughout my adult life. I met Tim when I joined his child and parent running class.

My son and I worked hard, but really enjoyed the hour long class together. My son has seasonal asthma and has become healthier and stronger since we began this great class. The class is definitely a workout, and Tim is a true teacher to the kids and parents.  Next, I began one-on-one training with Tim. It has been seven months since we started the private lessons, and he has yet to do the same workout with me. Wow, talk about never getting bored with a lesson! I am a stronger, more confident runner because of Tim's great advice and step by step instructions. I appreciate that Tim is always encouraging me to challenge myself, and with his help I have successfully completed a 5K run, a Sprint Triathlon and a Half Marathon. I always know that my weekly workouts with Tim will test me physically and help prepare me mentally for my next race. Tim is professional and I am glad to call him my "Coach" and friend.

Running is not the "ALL" solution to good fitness and health.  Strength training, cross-training, proper nutrition/diet, flexibility, mental fitness, and rest play important roles in achieving your running goals. These should all be integrated into your lifestyle. Of course, having a good running coach will help too!

My top two priorities...

I have two priorities to helping runners achieve their goals.

KIMMI

I've been working with Tim off and on over the last 8-9 years. When I first met Tim, I was totally out of shape. I couldn't run at all, I just knew I WANTED to run. I experienced back pain (due to my weight), struggled with asthma when running in the evening heat, etc. Not your typical poster child for running!

Tim developed a plan that took into account my lack of conditioning, as well as my lifestyle (I was a single parent and didn't have a lot of free time). He started me out on run/walk and introduced me to the wonders of a Timex Ironman interval watch - all these years later, I still use that watch! He also sent me to a running store to get fitted for the proper shoes.  I am the type that needs personal, hands on attention and accountability to someone other than my-self. I love the fact that Tim didn't just give me a schedule - he actually went out there and ran with me - at my (slow!) speed. He was always encouraging, but would call me out on my excuses for missing workouts! Tim also would send me an email a couple of times a week, checking in on me to see how the workouts were going, and would inquire about my eating as well.  Due to my schedule, at times in the past I've had to stop working with Tim (and have stopped running), sometimes for a year or two at a time, but I always end up going back to him when I need a jump start, or when my goals change. He's very flexible and will work with you on your specific needs, for as long or as short of a time as you need him. He really cares about you succeeding, even when you aren't actively training with him. You never feel like it is just a job for him.

LISE DEGRACE

"The first time I hired Tim was in 2002. I had decided to challenge myself by running a Half-Marathon. It was for me a way to accomplish myself and achieve a goal that would not be an instant gratification but more a longer term commitment if I wanted to succeed.

So I started to run...like crazy...without any kind of knowledge on how to train and even less knowledge on how to run.  You can imagine that it took me no time to hurt myself. Then I thought my little personal challenge was over. At that point I had nothing to lose but asking for help. Someone had talked to me about Tim Neckar, so I gave him a call.  I can say Tim started from scratch with me, telling me things like "don't run too early too fast, keep your back straight, tighten you abs, move your arms parallel to your body, don't raise your shoulders, relax you're too tight, breath, your legs should be pushing your body not pulling it" and I can go like that on and on and on. Tim also helped me a lot with any kind of running pain or injury by teaching me how to stretch better and how to run better. But more than anything else having him to run with me at my pace was the key to keep me motivated.  To me it makes all the difference. Every week there will be that guy who's going to run with me and bring all his knowledge and experience to teach me and enable me to push myself beyond my limits. In 2002, with Tim's help I managed to run two Half-Marathons - it was great. In 2009 after a few years of other activities and a lot of inactivity I decided I needed to be back on track and run again. There was absolutely no doubt in my mind that Tim Neckar was going to be my Running Coach again.  Thanks to you Tim, I'm ready to run another Half-Marathon and it's because of you... and also because of me a little.  I have to say this one last thing, if you are ready to hire Tim as a personal coach you must also be ready to work hard and I can promise you that you will reach your goals."

"I became a client of Tim's in January, 2009 so that he could train me for a 13 day endurance run at the end of the year. Before I hired Tim, I was struggling to complete my marathons. In four months, Tim shaved an hour off of my marathon time.

His training was the factor that enabled me to finish the Leadville Trail Marathon. Because of Tim's techniques, I'm strong enough to run 20 plus miles every weekend. Now I'm running ultra-marathons thanks to Tim's coaching.  When Tim talks about making training fun, he's serious. I look forward to the first of each month when I get my schedule to see what new elements Tim has introduced and what variety Tim has included. With Tim, you quickly learn that running is kind of like Baskin Robbins, it comes in many different "flavors." Tim is approachable, always willing to share his expertise and he's honest. He won't tell you what you want to hear but he'll tell you what you need to hear. Because of this, when Tim tells you that you've done well, you can trust that you truly have. Also, when you hire Tim, you become a part of the Runner One family. I was immediately accepted into the group and by the group. Not only do you get an elite runner as a coach when you hire Tim, you also get the benefit of a friend who celebrates your success even more than he celebrates his own. Not only have I met new friends through Tim, I've gained a new friend for life in Tim."
